Wizard of Oz
A great play. The acting was convincing and the music was very good. The closeness of the Windemere Theater creates a "right-on-top" feeling without getting to tight. This was my first time in the Windemere and I know where I will sit next time. Not on the floor seats. There is no slope......if you get behind a tall person, you are screwed. I sat behind a guy with a head the size of a microwave oven. The left side of the stage was non-existent. I will pick my seat from the level a few rows back from the floor. Perfect for any viewing.
Wizard of Oz..wonderful production
Greg Tamblyns production of Wizard of Oz, at the Newmark thru Jan 1st is a faithful take on the movie..the first scenes are even in black and white.
We saw opening night and though it had a few rough spots, I am still so impressed by the actors adaptations of these much loved characters.
I don't have a program so I don't know actors names, however the Tin Man sounded exactly like Ray Bolger in the movie.
The kids playing the Munchkins were all charming and talented, and "Happy" as Toto was a very good doggie.
My only negative comment was that both "Dorothy" and the "Evil Witch" tended to be overly excited in every line...too much and sometimes difficult to understand. I'm sure this will improve as the production plays however.
My granddaughter,6, who loves the movie was thrilled with the play and wants to go back..I'm tempted to see it again at the end of the run to see if it's tightened up just a little.
It's a long production, which might make it hard for the very young and there was the sound of fright from a little child seated in front of us at the flying monkeys, of course, so younger children may be over excited by these parts. Consider your childs ability to accept fantasy when thinking about this play.
Also at the Hatfield are Tears of Joys Ride the Red Mare-a wonderful pupped production suitable for the very young.
Just OK, could have production improvement
Did I enjoy? Yes, but it was a regular show which in my opinon lacked more audience interaction, jokes and production. The venue is amazing and looks well equipped, but sitting in first Mezzanine sound was lacking. Production of scenes were ok and the acting from the Lion was basically the best part of the show. They threw in a couple jokes but need to maintain more attention as I saw most of the audience in the same condition as we were. I have been to many plays, many on road plays and this seemed like a well produced highschool play or an average produced Broadway. It leaves a lot of room for improvement, it's OK to watch and loved the Venue will definitely be back to see more plays.
